WE HAVE SHIPLAP AND WOOD FLOOR IN THE KITCHEN

October 6, 2024

This weekend I feel like we got a lot done.  There is still so much to do but at least the house is starting to smell a bit better, until you go upstairs.  The renter that lived there locked their dogs upstairs and it smells so bad up there.  We got there on Saturday morning and of course I started on the yard.  Chad had come up on Saturday and took a bunch of logs and yard waste to the dump.  I was just raking up some of the debris to try and fill the yard waste bin since we have to pay for garbage we try and fill it.  Still finding small bits of trash in the yard.  Chad bought a magnet roller thing so I rolled it around the yard to pick up some metal.  The truck was full so we did a quick run to dump so we could fill it up again.  While we were at the dump some guy that the floor guy gave our number to gave us a call about leveling the house.  He sounded like he wanted to come and do it now but I told him we would want an estimate.  There is a company coming on the 23rd to give us an estimate.  We will see if we ever hear from this other guy again.  When we were talking to him he said there is a chance they would have to pull up some of the wood floors to get to the joist.

I have to boil water on a hot pot since we don't have hot water right now.  I gave the living/dining room a quick mop.  Chad had started tearing out the kitchen floor and discovered that we have wood floor under there.  We are thinking we may take those out to put in our bedroom upstairs.  Parts of the kitchen floor are in really good shape.  WHY WOULD YOU COVER THIS UP?

The wood floor that was under 2 sheets of linoleum and particle board.  So pretty.
There are 2 bathrooms in the house but currently we only have a functioning toilet in the downstairs bathroom.  There was water leaking into the downstairs bedroom closet from the bathroom upstairs so we are not using that one.  Chad took out the toilet.  The bathroom downstairs is the one we will eventually get rid of because it is a horrible add on.  As you can see it sticks out like a sore thumb and when you walk into it you have to duck because the door is so short. I don't think I actually took any pictures of that bathroom because it is so ridiculous.  It is also so gross.  So I tore out the linoleum and the cabinet and sink.  I don't think the people that lived there ever cleaned.  EVER.  The toilet was sickening.  I scrubbed and scrubbed and we got a new seat.  All so we can tolerate using that bathroom.  We are not staying at the house because it still smells bad so we stay in motels when we go up.

Then I started on my own discovery mission.  The trim around most of the windows is flush with the walls so I wanted to find out what the heck was under there.  Paint, wallpaper, paneling, drywall and then many many layers of wallpaper followed by shiplap.  I was so darn excited.  I started ripping out layers.
My progress this weekend.  Check out the shiplap on the left.  Brought in the table from the garage.  I did mop the floor but then made a mess with the drywall and demo.
Shiplap in the kitchen.  Also under paneling, drywall and wallpaper in some spots.  I tested a small spot with some vinegar cleaner and the paper from the wallpaper does come off the shiplap.
We actually did some measurements this weekend.  Finally.  Some of the flooring has been removed but not all yet.  I took down that horrible black sheer dusty curtain off the kitchen window. Also removed all the staples on the window frame.
Vacuumed the stairs.  I still need to remove carpet tack in all the bedrooms, upstairs hall and the stairs.  It is going to smell so much better once that is done and the floors get cleaned.
Sampling of some of the wallpaper in the kitchen.
This was the disgusting mess under one of the cabinets in the kitchen.  No wonder there were rats.
A sample of some of the wallpaper that was in the living room.  So pretty.
Dining room wall.  There was obviously a door into the pantry?  So I am thinking of covering this wall back up with wallpaper.  I am going to try to find something that is close to the wallpaper that I found on the walls.

The huge mess I made.  This was Saturday night.  I cleaned this up on Sunday.  It was a productive weekend.  We got a lot done.  Of course it never feels like enough.  Lots of dreaming.
